Cyclone Information

The cyclone season officially runs from 1st November to 30th April each year. However, cyclones have been known to occur in every month of the year, so it’s important to remain prepared.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) is the designated Hazard Management Agency for Cyclones in Western Australia.

If a cyclone approaches the Shire of East Pilbara, you can find more information on the DFES website, Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) website, or Emergency WA.

How to Prepare for Cyclone Season

DFES recommends that you undertake the following before the commencement of cyclone season:

  • Remove any unwanted materials or rubbish from your residence or work area.
  • Trim trees of excess height and growth to enable them to withstand higher winds. The Council’s annual free green waste collection will support you in this.
  • Clear drains of rubbish or obstructions.
  • Create an emergency kit, including medication, a first aid kit, torch (and batteries), canned food, portable radio (and batteries), and drinking water containers.
  • Locate a safe place to shelter your pets.
  • Organise tie-down areas and supplies for caravans, boats, trailers, etc.

Community Alerts and Public Warning System

Community Alerts are available on the local radio and television stations in your region. Coloured lights and flags in some towns also indicate alert status.
