Youth Week Performance brings Hope
Our threads, this place, your moment – Youth Week Zero Emcee has taken place in 14–15 April, Nullagine and Marble Bar.
The Shire of East Pilbara is proud to bring two lyric and song writing workshops, and a live performance to the communities of Marble Bar and Nullagine, thanks to a collaboration with Perth International Jazz Festival.
Rapper and hip-hop King Zero Emcee was in Nullagine on Monday the 14 April and Marble Bar on Tuesday 15 April. Zero Emcee knows the importance of following your dreams. As a 12-year-old he dreamed of becoming a songwriter and a rapper and at 29 years of age he is at the top of his game.
“The last five years I have really hit my stride and come into my own in the industry,” he said.
“I’ve toured the southwest performing as far south as Esperance and to three remote communities in the Northwest running workshops for my music. This will be my fourth remote community when we hit the East Pilbara.
“In June I head to Europe to perform with an orchestra.
“Rapping saved me. I couldn’t read or write, and I had low grades at school.
“But through music, I became more motivated to study. I was always good at English, and one complements the other you learn about syllables and double entendres and big words and how to pronounce them and each skill complements the song writing and the ability to read music as well.
“I like to tell the kids in my workshops that no dream is too big or too small and you can make a difference.”
Zero conducted workshops performing tracks and writing lyrics and demonstrating singing hooks with students.
But the workshops are not only for the students. Zero says elderly residents and parents also love it.
“There is something for everyone in these sessions,” he said.
In Nullagine, the workshop was held at the library from 2-4pm, with performances in the Yirrungadji Sports Courts at 6pm.
In Marble Bar on April 15, the Rec Shed held the workshops from 2-4pm and the performance was at the Civic Centre from 6pm. The program has been supported by the Shire of East Pilbara, the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries and Circuit West.
Shire President Anthony Middelton said, “We are proud to support initiatives that celebrate the diversity of our vast region and provide opportunities to our young people and the broader community. We have so much talent in remote regional Australia and these initiatives help to develop local talent, along with providing social benefits.”
Youth Week WA is the largest annual celebration of young people aged 10 to 25 years in Western Australia!
This week-long event features various activities across WA, showcasing the incredible contributions of young people to our social, cultural and economic life.
The theme for Youth Week WA 2025 is ‘Our Threads, This Place, Your Moment,’ reflecting young people's connections with their community, each other, and themselves. Chosen by the diverse Youth Week WA Planning Committee, this theme symbolises the patchwork of contributions that young people make, forming the rich tapestry of Western Australia.
