The Newman Cricket Association has been awarded a grant of $5,000 as one of seven local community groups sharing in almost $50,000 in cash to assist their organisations.
Each application is eligible for a grant of up to $10,000 in cash and/or in-kind contributions.
The Grants and Sponsorship programs aim to strengthen the community and support diverse activities and projects that are responsive and represent community needs.
Shire President Anthony Middleton said the grants would enable the groups to build the capacity of individuals, community groups, and local organisations to achieve their priorities.
“It will also celebrate and recognise the shire’s diversity, history, lifestyles and environment, which is unique.”
Cr Middleton said most of the projects supported the local businesses and delivered an economic benefit to the shire.
Club President Jono Smaill said the money would be used to promote the club’s sustainability program.
“We are seeking the funds for the program to help promote community engagement, healthy lifestyles, and teamwork among local residents,” Mr Smaill said.
He said the program was designed for cricket enthusiasts of all skill levels, with a focus on youth and underrepresented groups to meet the needs of Newman’s unique environment and community.
“Activities our program includes are organising and running a structured cricket competition over the summer months, featuring regular fixtures, tournaments, training sessions and well as coaching and umpiring capacity building.”
