Mother’s Day Classic - walk and raise money for breast cancer

The Mother’s Day Classic is being held on Sunday, 11 May 2025.

Shire President Anthony Middleton said, “The event kicks off at the Newman Recreation Centre at 9am. The community walk to raise awareness and funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, as part of the national Mother’s Day Classic initiative, has been running for nine years in Newman.”

Breast cancer survivor Chelsey Heaslip is participating in the Mother’s Day Classic this year.

“I’m really keen to walk in this important event with my three children this year to help raise money for breast cancer,” she said.

Ms Heaslip finished treatment for breast cancer 3 weeks ago and has been travelling between Newman and Perth for treatment for the past 12 months.

“It’s been a journey that’s for sure,” she said.

“Rural and remote women need a lot more support services to assist them through the treatment and that has been a real eye opener for me.

“I worked fulltime throughout my treatment still needing to be there for my children, through meals and parenting, even though you have cancer, life doesn’t stop.

“It’s a lot to navigate, when your children need you for life’s hurdles, and I was in Perth, that was difficult.”

While there is a support service for women with breast cancer in Karratha, Newman does not have that.

Ms Heaslip said she would love to be a point of contact for other women undergoing treatment in Newman.

“I would like to be that person they can call and ask questions and help them get the services they need when navigating this disease.”

Shire President Anthony Middleton said last year the community raised a total of $6,013 for breast cancer research.

“Whether you’re keen to lend a hand with registrations, cheer on participants along the course, or help at the finish line – we’d love to have you on board,” Cr Middleton said.

“This is a great way for our community to come together, support this cause and celebrate the strong women in our lives.

“It’s an important community event supporting a great cause.”
