Newman’s Uniting Church is one of seven local community groups that have been awarded almost $50,000 in cash to assist their organisations.
Each application is eligible for a grant of up to $10,000 in cash and/or in-kind contributions.
The Grants and Sponsorship programs have awarded $ 9,941.00 to the church’s Marble Bar Youth Program for frontier services aimed at strengthening the community and supporting diverse activities and projects that represent community needs.
Shire President Anthony Middleton said the grants would enable the groups to build the capacity of individuals, community groups, and local organisations to achieve their priorities.
“It will also celebrate and recognise the shire’s diversity, history, lifestyles and environment, which is unique.”
Cr Middleton said most of the projects supported the local businesses and delivered an economic benefit to the shire.
Marble Bar Youth Program has established a pilot youth services program in Marble Bar, which has been running for seven months.
Uniting Church Partnerships and Trusts Manager, Paul Deverell, said the program has been designed to assist at-risk First Nations young people along with their families, as the primary participants.
“The program offers mentoring activities to young adults covering skills development in areas like emotional regulation, conflict resolution, money management and budgeting, legal and workplace rights, nutrition and cooking,” Mr Deverall said.
“Other structured activities for kids and teenagers include games nights, arts and craft, sharing of culture, sports, and physical activities.
“The youth services program will operate from 5pm–9pm fortnightly on a Saturday across four sites, the municipal swimming pool, sports oval, Marble Bar Primary community garden and the Civic Centre.”
The Shire grant will cover delivery costs of the program like venue hire, catering, travel and specialty equipment.
