Council Adopts A Forward-Planning 2021-2022 Annual Budget

Infrastructure improvements and planning for long-term financial sustainability are the pillars of the 2021-2022 Shire of East Pilbara Annual Budget adopted at Council today.

Meeting the current and future needs of the Shire’s residents is at the core of this year’s budget.

“The 2021-2022 budget reflects our commitment to continue improvements not just this year, but every year moving forward,” Shire President Anthony Middleton said.

“As part of the budget, we have allocated a $19.3 million commitment to upgrades of the Shire’s airports, which will increase jobs, and increase tourism, economic investment and access to health services.

“We have also allocated $6.5 million to upgrade the Liquid Waste Facility at the Newman Waste Management site to meet the needs of current and future growth in our town’s population and mining industry.

“This is a comprehensive budget that addresses the needs of all aspects of our Shire, with funding allocated for areas including general infrastructure upgrades, tourism growth, youth needs, roads renewal, recreation and economic development.”

Cr Middleton said the Shire was planning ahead for what the community would need in the future, but was also prioritising projects that would improve residents’ lives now and increase the liveability of the Heart of the Pilbara.

“Our Council and Shire staff have worked hard to prepare a financially-responsible budget that will lead us into the future confidently, allowing us to know for certain we have planned appropriately for whatever needs addressing in the future,” he said.

“The 2021-2022 budget reflects an approach towards sound, long-term financial management and delivering key priority projects informed by community and key stakeholder feedback, which puts a clear and attainable way forward for the Shire of East Pilbara.”
