The Shire of East Pilbara is investing in local skills and career pathways, welcoming two new workplace trainees as part of its growing traineeship program.
Kirra Hanneford-Kennedy, based in Marble Bar and working between Marble Bar and Nullagine, commenced her traineeship in May 2025 after starting with the Shire as a casual Rural Community Development Officer last year. She is completing a Certificate III in Community Development with North Regional TAFE.
Kirra said the role has been a great way to learn while contributing to her community.
“I like working in Marble Bar and Nullagine because every day is different. I’m learning heaps about how the Shire works with the community, and it’s been good getting hands-on experience while I study.”
The Shire’s newest trainee, Timmika Cox, joined the Aviation Services team on 1 September 2025 as an Administration Support Officer (Trainee). She will begin her Certificate III in Local Government through WALGA in October.
Timmika said the experience so far has been both exciting and supportive.
“Starting in Aviation Services has been a big change for me, but I’m really enjoying it. The team’s been supportive, and I’m looking forward to picking up new skills and getting my qualification while I’m here.”
Shire CEO Mr Steven Harding said the program reflects the organisation’s commitment to building local capacity.
“It’s great to see young people getting a start with the Shire. These traineeships give locals the chance to learn on the job, earn a qualification and build a career, all while staying in the Pilbara. That’s a win for them and a win for the community,” Mr Harding said.
The Shire will soon be looking to recruit further trainees across areas including Work Health & Safety, Sport and Recreation, Aquatics, and Local Government.
By offering workplace traineeships, the Shire provides structured opportunities for participants to gain valuable qualifications while contributing to the delivery of services that support East Pilbara communities.
Eligibility

- Applicants must be committed to working within the East Pilbara region.
