The Shire of East Pilbara has wrapped up another successful Street Blitz, held over Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 October in East Newman with more than 72 cubic metres of waste cleared from local streets and public spaces in just two days.

The twice-yearly clean-up, part of the East Newman Community Outreach program, has become one of the Shire’s most impactful community initiatives combining practical action with social connection. The event brings together families, young people, and local service providers to restore pride, reduce litter and make neighbourhoods safer and more inviting.

This week’s Street Blitz was proudly supported by BHP, with on-ground support from Veolia Australia, which provided a large team of staff and several vehicles across both days. Additional support came from Keep Australia Beautiful WA, who supplied high-visibility vests and litter grabbers, and from 54 Reasons, Hope Community Services, McKillop Family Services, Pilbara Legal Services, and Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation, alongside dozens of community volunteers who rolled up their sleeves to help.

Among the many community members who took part was a local Fijian family and their six children, who volunteered both days in the Pilbara heat a powerful display of community spirit, family teamwork, and pride in their town.

“It’s fantastic to see this level of local pride and collaboration,” said Shire President Cr Anthony Middleton. “Everyone pitched in from our volunteers and community groups to our partners like BHP and Veolia and together we’ve made a real difference. The results speak for themselves over 70 cubic metres of rubbish gone in just two days.”

In addition to the waste collected, 15 bags of recyclable containers were gathered for refund through the Containers for Change program. The clean-up also helped remove hazardous debris ahead of the upcoming cyclone season improving both the look and safety of the neighbourhood.

The Shire extends its sincere thanks to all participants, volunteers, and supporting organisations for their ongoing commitment to a cleaner, safer, and stronger Newman.
