The Shire of East Pilbara is urging residents to stay prepared this cyclone season, with the updated Australian Warning System now in place for all natural disaster alerts across Western Australia.
As a region, the East Pilbara knows all too well the impact that cyclones can leave behind. Many parts of the Shire are still recovering from the damage caused by Cyclone Zelia last summer, and the Shire is encouraging the community to take extra care and be well prepared heading into this year’s season.
The new Australian Warning System provides a simple, consistent set of warning levels for cyclones, floods, storms and bushfires. The Shire is reminding residents to understand what each level means and to take action early when conditions begin to change.
The warning levels are:
• Advice – prepare, stay aware and keep up to date.
• Watch and Act – there is a possible threat to lives or homes. Take action now to protect yourself and others.
• Emergency Warning – there is a threat to lives and homes. You may be in danger and need to act immediately.
Shire President Cr Anthony Middleton said communities across the East Pilbara were well aware of how quickly conditions can turn.
“Cyclones are part of life up here, and we’ve all seen what they can do. Zelia left a big mark on our region, and it reminded all of us why preparation matters,” Cr Middleton said.
“Now’s the time to get ready — clean up around the house, look over your cyclone plan and make sure you’re checking the right information when a system starts forming.”
The Shire is encouraging all residents, businesses and travellers to use official sources for warnings, road closures and emergency updates throughout the season.
