A record 52 children, nearly double last year’s 27, immersed themselves in hands-on science and chemistry experiments during the latest school holiday STEM program at Newman Library, highlighting strong demand for accessible STEM learning in the East Pilbara.
Delivered by the Shire of East Pilbara through its Newman Library, the program targeted children aged 8 to 12 with interactive, inclusive workshops designed to make learning fun and practical. Parents were actively encouraged to join in, creating shared family experiences that help skills and confidence stick long after the holidays end.
Shire President Cr Anthony Middleton said the surge in participation highlighted the real demand for modern learning opportunities in remote communities.
“Living in the East Pilbara means our kids are more than a thousand kilometres from the nearest major city, and they do not always get access to these kinds of experiences,” Cr Middleton said.
“This program helped bridge that gap. Seeing local kids get stuck into it, and their parents right there with them, shows how important these opportunities are. The turnout speaks for itself.”
The initiative also underscores the evolving role of regional libraries as vibrant community hubs.
“Libraries are not just about books anymore,” Cr Middleton said.
“They are places where kids can try new things, build confidence and maybe find something they want to stick with.”
Funding from The LBW Trust supported the purchase of new science equipment and additional STEM resources. Robotics activities are planned for introduction soon, once the newly acquired equipment is rolled out.
Building on this momentum, the Shire of East Pilbara is exploring ways to expand STEM opportunities throughout the year, providing more regular access to engaging, contemporary education for local children.
