The Newman Recreation Centre will cease operations with immediate effect, following a decision by the Department of Education, the owner of the building, to close the building.
The Department of Education, has concerns over the structural integrity of parts of the building. The Shire of East Pilbara operates the Recreation Centre under a licence from the Department of Education.
The closure of the Newman Recreation Centre will have an immediate impact on staff and members.
All members and staff of the Recreation Centre are being notified of the closure.
The Shire will make every effort to support its employees through this transition.
Recreation Centre staff will contact members directly regarding options for their membership. In the meantime, all memberships will be suspended, and all requests for the refund of forward payments will be approved and processed as quickly as possible.
The Shire will continue to engage with the Department of Education, and will provide updates to the community as they become available.
Shire President, Anthony Middleton said: “This decision has come as a shock to the Shire and every effort will be made to restore services and support staff and members as we grapple with the consequences of the Government’s decision”.
