Performers Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse will be conducting a series of concerts in Newman, Nullagine and Marble Bar later this month.

The First Nations performers have just returned from an International Music Expo in Japan where they said audiences loved their music in the traditional Noongar language.

Shire President Anthony Middleton said, “The Shire of East Pilbara is proud to present this concert series. Events such as this enhance liveability factors, social connection and community well-being.

We are committed to creating welcoming, vibrant towns through shared and memorable experiences.”

“The duo perform in language, with music connects all people, whatever the language.”

For Gina Williams performing in her first language is a very important part of the shows the duo offer audiences.

“Audiences have engaged and connected in ways we never could have imagined,” Ms Williams said.

She said from the big crowds in Japan to the smaller performances on country in the North West, she is equally excited.

“We actually love performing more intimate concerts.

“We love being on country, and spend a lot of our time on the road in regional WA.

“The weekend before we came to Japan we were at Cardabia Station, and we are really excited to be heading back up north to do what we love.”

Ms Williams said she has great hope for children in the future.

“We see up to 3000 children in a week, and in that we see the change that is coming.

“Kids don’t see the differences they want to connect.

“Ultimately, we all want for similar things; we want a peaceful existence, we want to feel belonging, have food and shelter, have fond memories, something to do today and things to look forward to in the future.”

Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse have performed two Operas in Noongar language and song and said initially, they were surprised to be asked, after they were approached by the West Australian Opera Company.

“We didn’t think Opera was “our thing.”

“But what we discovered was that it wasn’t about the differences at all.

“In fact, opera is about as close as you can get to our traditional ways of expression and cultural maintenance.”

The duo will perform in Newman on May 23 at the Town Square, Nullagine on May 27 at Gallop Hall and Marble Bar on May 28 at the Marble Bar Civic Centre.
