Free veterinary services will return to remote East Pilbara communities this year, helping pet owners access essential animal health care while supporting healthier, safer and more manageable animal populations.
The Shire of East Pilbara is again working with AMRRIC to deliver the program, with funding provided by the Shire and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
The program will provide surgical desexing, microchipping, anti-parasitic treatments for ticks, fleas, mange and worms, and support for animal welfare concerns. Services will be free for eligible concession card holders.
The 2026 program builds on last year’s successful visits to Newman, Nullagine and Marble Bar, where 54 animals were desexed, with microchipping and lifetime registration also provided for local cats and dogs.
This year, the program will focus on remote communities, with clinics planned for Jigalong and Parnngurr in June, followed by Punmu, Kunawarritji and Kiwirrkurra in August.
Shire President Cr Anthony Middleton said the program will deliver practical benefits for pet owners, animals and the wider community.
“Getting access to a vet is not always simple when you live in a remote community,” Cr Middleton said.
“This program brings important animal health services closer to the people, which means healthier pets, fewer unwanted litters and less stress for owners trying to do the right thing.
“It also has a wider community benefit. When animals are healthier, desexed and properly cared for, it helps reduce roaming animals, nuisance issues and animal welfare problems before they become bigger problems for families, rangers and communities.
“This is a good, practical program. It helps pet owners, it helps rangers and it helps communities manage animal health in a more sustainable way. We are very pleased to be working with AMRRIC again to make this happen.”
Registrations are now open, with eligible residents able to register online via the booking form or contact the Shire of East Pilbara on (08) 9175 8000 for more information.
