Creative Tuesdays Bring Joy and Connection for East Pilbara Elders

Each Tuesday, Elders across Newman are coming together at the Newman Library to take part in hands-on arts and crafts, as part of the Shire of East Pilbara’s Elders Program delivered in partnership with EPIS (East Pilbara Independence Support).

The weekly sessions provide a welcoming space to learn new skills, stay active, and spend time with others in the community. Since launching, participants have explored a variety of creative mediums including cyanotype printing, paint pouring, and resin crafts, with mosaic-making planned for upcoming sessions.

The EPIS team plays a vital role in supporting the program, assisting Elders throughout each activity and helping create a warm, inclusive environment. Each session concludes with a shared lunch provided by EPIS, encouraging conversation and connection.

The program has been met with strong enthusiasm, with many participants trying these activities for the first time and enjoying the chance to do something different each week.

Participant Michelle Mogridge shared her experience:

“I really enjoy coming to the craft sessions at the library. We don’t just sit around doing nothing, we’re always making something. Last time I made a dragon, and now I’m making another one. It’s great because we get to stay active and do fun activities.”

Michelle also highlighted the growing community interest:

“We’re encouraging others to come along too. We all get excited about Tuesdays, just like kids going to school. We look forward to coming together at the library.”

Shire of East Pilbara President Cr Anthony Middleton said it’s great to see Elders making the most of the program.

“It’s good to see people getting out, trying something new and having a bit of a laugh together. That’s what it’s all about. We want to keep creating opportunities like this where people can stay active and connected in the community.”
