The Shire of East Pilbara is putting community safety in sharp focus with the announcement of CCTV cameras’ installation beginning next month.

Phase one of the project, starting in mid-December, is worth $757,000 and includes the installation of cameras in Newman hotspots.

Locations will include installation around the Newman town centre, Newman Aquatic Centre, Newman Recreation Centre and more.

“We understand community safety, especially crime, in Newman is an important issue for our residents,” Shire President Anthony Middleton said.

“The installation of CCTV cameras in Newman will be an effective tool for the Newman Police and Shire staff to help address crime in our town.

“It won’t stop all crime, but hopefully even the presence of cameras will deter some people from offending.”

There will be about 100 cameras installed over the life of the project in Newman, including phase two which will take place at a later date.

Newman Police and the Shire will both have a set up to review footage captured from the CCTV cameras.
