Youth & Community Garden Calls for Volunteers

The Shire of East Pilbara’s Youth & Community Garden at the Newman Youth Centre has officially sprung to life, and the team is now looking for more volunteers to help it grow.

Since the garden’s launch in October, young people and community members have been busy building garden beds, planting seedlings and bringing the space to life. The first regular volunteer has now come on board, and the Shire is inviting more locals to join the growing crew. Shire President Cr Anthony Middleton said the garden was quickly becoming a positive, hands-on space for young people and the wider community.

“Community gardens grow friendships as well as food. This one is already giving our young people a place to pitch in, learn a few skills and feel proud of what they’re building,” Cr Middleton said.

“We’ve had a great start, and now we’re keen to get a few more locals involved — whether you’re a keen gardener, a handy helper, or just someone who wants to support the kids and be part of something positive in town.”

The Youth and Community Garden is a partnership between the Shire’s Youth Centre and the local community, with young people helping to guide the design, planting and day-to-day activity in the space.

Supported by the Government of Western Australia’s Department of Communities through the Community Gardens Grants Program, the initiative aims to build skills, social inclusion and wellbeing while creating a welcoming community hub at the Youth Centre.

The Shire is now seeking expressions of interest from volunteers who can assist with watering, weeding, planting days, simple maintenance and sharing gardening knowledge with young people.

Community members of all ages are encouraged to get involved by joining the volunteer list or dropping in to learn more.
