For many people, moving to Newman is their first experience of life in the Pilbara — and the annual Welcome to Newman event is designed to make that transition a little easier.
The Shire of East Pilbara will host its flagship community welcome event on Saturday, 14 March 2026, from 4.00pm to 9.00pm at Kangaroo Oval, bringing together residents, families, clubs and local organisations to showcase everything Newman has to offer.
The event provides a rare opportunity for newcomers and long-term locals alike to connect directly with sporting clubs, community groups and service providers through market stalls and interactive come-and-try stations hosted by local sports groups. These hands-on activities are designed to encourage participation, registrations and volunteering.
The event will also feature live entertainment, a range of food vans, and additional market stalls.
Shire President Cr Anthony Middleton said Welcome to Newman plays an important role in helping people put down roots in a remote town with a constantly changing population.
“People come to Newman from all over Australia and often the world for work, but what makes them stay is feeling connected,” Cr Middleton said.
“This event helps people find their club, their community group, their volunteering opportunity, or simply meet others in the same boat. That sense of belonging matters.
“Families will again be a strong focus, with free children’s activities including bouncy castles, live entertainment and interactive displays designed to encourage participation across all ages.
The event will again feature guided bus tours of the iconic Mount Whaleback Mine, offering residents a rare opportunity to see one of the world’s largest open-cut iron ore operations up close.
Tour numbers are limited and bookings are essential.
