A packed house at the Newman Hotel celebrated the outstanding achievements of local volunteers, athletes, coaches and community groups at this year’s Stars of the East Pilbara – Community and Sports Awards.
Guests were treated to lively music from Poppy’s Music, an inspiring keynote from Paralympian Brant Garvey, and the quick wit of MC Christina Morrissy, who kept everyone smiling from start to finish.
It was one of those nights filled with warmth, laughter and community pride — a reminder of what makes the East Pilbara special.
Shire President Cr Anthony Middleton said the event captured the spirit that makes the East Pilbara such a strong and connected community.
“People here look out for one another, show up when it counts and take real pride in seeing others succeed,” Cr Middleton said. “The night wasn’t just about trophies — it was about celebrating the heart and spirit that keep our towns strong.”
“Every finalist and winner should be incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved. These people are the backbone of our towns — the coaches, volunteers and organisers who give their time to make things happen.”
Paralympian and keynote speaker Brant Garvey received an outstanding reception for his story of resilience and determination. Sharing his journey from childhood adversity to becoming Australia’s first above-knee amputee Ironman, his message of “no excuses” struck a powerful chord with the audience. Many guests said it was one of the most moving and motivating speeches they’d ever heard — anywhere, let alone right here in Newman.
This year’s winners were:
• Junior Sportsperson of the Year – Maddison Kleine-Deters
• Sportsperson of the Year – Matt Annick
• Coach of the Year – Roxie Kleine-Deters

• Community Volunteer of the Year – Andrew Tassone
