The Shire of East Pilbara is excited to announce a $370,000 project to provide lighting for small-ball sports at Newman’s Emu Oval.

Identified in the Shire’s Strategic Recreation Masterplan, the lighting project includes a $113,333 grant through the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries – Club Night Lights program. The project includes the installation of two additional light pole towers, and changing all existing lighting fixtures to LED technology.

Shire President Anthony Middleton said while there would be a short disruption to Emu Oval use, the long-term benefits would make the wait worthwhile.

“Small-ball sports such as Cricket and Tee-ball use this Oval, and this upgrade will provide the option for additional fixtures and general use,” he said.

“We’re also excited to be able to tick off yet another item from the Strategic Recreation Masterplan, which was a collaborative effort between the Shire and the community to understand what recreation and sporting priorities were important to the community. The Shire appreciates the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries for coming on board with this project, which will add community value and maximise use of the oval for different sports.

“We will have regular updates regarding the project in the lead up to – and during – the works period, which begins on 20 February 2023 and should end in early to mid-March.”

The State Government, through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, is a major supporter of community sport and recreation facilities in Western Australia. Sport and recreation builds stronger, healthier, happier and safer communities. When we play sport our whole community wins.

During the works period, there will be several disruptions the Shire wants to community to be aware of:

  • During the works, Emu Oval cannot be booked or used for organised sport.
  • Community casual use, such as dog exercise, will be restricted for community safety.
  • Elevated work platforms, crane and bore hole machines will be in use at certain times. When in use, please refrain from entering the oval area.
  • There will be no impact on access to the Capricorn Oval precinct, however a section of the car parking adjacent to Emu Oval will be cordoned off as part of the works.

Follow the Shire’s Facebook page for up-to-date information each week on the status of the works schedule.
