The fashion industry is now the world’s second largest contribution to waste. Australian’s buy more clothing per person than any other country. The average Aussie purchases 27kg of new clothing and textiles every year and discard 23kg of that. All this ends up in landfill in third world countries. Choosing to upcycle is a small contribution to saving the planet. In this workshop participants will value add and upcycle a preloved shirt or other item of clothing giving it new life (please bring to workshop). Participants will experience the meditative qualities of slow stitch using basic embroidery stitches to embellish the item.

Paper Flowers | Richard Brooks | Tuesday, 7 October

Event description

Paper Flowers Richard Brooks
Tuesday, 7 October 2025
6:00pm - 8:00pm
Pop-Up Shop, Newman Town Square, Lee Lane

Hiding in the vastness of the Pilbara for the past thirteen years, Richard Brooks (RIB) has made use of the generosity of space and time, the lack of interruptions and the absence of personal relationships to formulate a uniqueness and a viewpoint that might be professionally described as an autistic tick. Unconstrained from the criticisms of his peers; as there are as yet none, RIB has been free to roam to the sometimes-terrifying edges beyond cognitive acceptance and often returns with armfuls of stories to tell and gloriously unique ways of telling them. Whimsically sullen, melodically insightful and delightfully stoic RIB is the commentary the end of times needs to hear.

Along with a boot full of paint, Richard has been collecting egg cartons and hundreds of pipe cleaners.

This workshop explores the dimensions of egg carton flower building - you will make ‘mulla mulla’ and create a bouquet of flowers to put in a standing toilet paper roll vase.

Capacity limited to 15 attendees.
