Getting Active

If you want to get active, it is easy. The following facilities are available to all residents of the East Pilbara.

Newman also has an exercise trail that starts just outside the Recreation Centre on the corner Fortescue & Gregory Avenue. Each station explains the activities best for that piece of equipment and there is even a skateboarding  station.

If skateboarding is your thing, why not visit one of the Shire’s skate parks. They are free and located in Newman and Marble Bar.

If you fancy a walk which is a little harder than the normal – try the trail to Radio Hill Lookout. Once at the top you will enjoy a panoramic view of town and surrounding area. But don’t forget to pack some water and a hat. The trail starts off Newman Drive.

If you want to venture a little further with your friends or family for a picnic why not try one of these spots:

  • Ophthalmia Dam: sailing, barbecues and picnics (no camping); 20 km E.
  • Mt Newman: excellent views; 25 km NW.
  • Wanna Munna: site of Aboriginal rock carvings; 74 km W.
  • Rockpools and waterholes: at Kalgans Pool (65 km NE), Three Pools (75 km N) and Weeli Wolli (99 kmW).
  • Newman Waterholes and Art Sites Tour: maps available at the Newman Visitor Centre
  • Karijini National Park: 196 km N.

If organised sport is more your thing, you can find one of the many sporting clubs in the Shire by visiting the Department of Sport and Recreation website and entering the types of activities or sports you are interested in.

Marble Bar Community Resource Centre has a community garden. So why not go along to pick up or share some gardening skills with one another, learn how to set up a reticulation system for home, identify plants and grow plants from seed & cuttings, harvest and prepare the produce to banquet on, and preserve when we have abundance. The Resource centre welcomes people to get involved. It is located at 11 Francis Street, Marble bar.
