The Shire of East Pilbara is running a photography competition and exhibition to showcase the broad range of talent in the East Pilbara and to celebrate the Outback Fusion Festival 2022.

We invite all ages and skill levels to enter this exciting competition. The top 20 entries will be selected by a panel of judges for an exhibition, where the public will be invited to vote for the People's Choice Award from the exhibited photos.

Theme: What does the Heart of the Pilbara look like to you? What images come to mind when you think about the East Pilbara? What sort of people, places and animals do you love?

Entries open: 20th December, 2021

Entries close: 11th February, 2022

Entry Guidelines

The purpose of this competition is to encourage East Pilbara residents, visitors and workers, of all ages and skill levels to be inspired to participate in a creative challenge that promotes the diversity of the Shire of East Pilbara.

20 entries will be selected by a panel of judges to be hung at locations to be determined by the Shire, the winner of the Youth category, Open category and Professional category will be announced at the annual Outback Fusion Festival in March 2022.

The 20 entries exhibited are judged by visitors to the Exhibition, which will travel to Newman, Marble Bar and Nullagine, and a People’s Choice Award will be presented to the winning entrant in late April.

Theme: The competition theme is “Heart of the Pilbara”. What does the heart of the Pilbara look like to you? What images come to mind when you think about the East Pilbara? What sort of people, places, things, and animals do you love?

Categories

• Youth Category (Ages 10 – 17 years old)
• Open Category
• Professionals Category

Youth aged 10 – 17 years old can the Open category as well. The Open category is for amateurs who do not receive any income from their photography. The Professional category is for professionals and semi-professional photographers.

Image Requirements

  • All entries must be submitted in landscape orientation;
  • All entries must be submitted electronically through the online form. The image must be a High
    Resolution JPEG or JPG and be at least 2500px on the longest side and must not exceed 10mb.
    Do not watermark or put any identifying branding on the images. This is to allow the images
    to be judged anonymously;
  • All images must be named as the title of the image and include the entrants name,
    and what the image is of;
  • All images submitted must be taken in the 2021 or 2022 calendar year.
  • Professional Category submissions must not have been preciously displayed publicly

Subject matter is restricted to the locality of the Shire of East Pilbara.

The 20 winning entries selected for the exhibition will be professionally printed. Your entry fee will go towards the payment of this service. The exhibition will travel to Newman, Marble Bar and Nullagine to give all three towns the opportunity to view, and vote for the Peoples Choice Award.

After the exhibition finishes the framed image will be returned to those entrants who were selected
for exhibition.

Entry Fees

To enter the competition, you must be living, visiting or working within the Shire of East Pilbara.

If you are under 18 years of age, you must have consent from a parent, carer or guardian.

The fees are as follows:

Youth Category $10
Open Category $20
Professional Category $20

Please note: Each entrant can only submit a maximum of 2 entries across all categories.

Judging

All entries submitted will be presented and judged by a panel chosen by the Shire. Winners of the Youth Category, Open Category, and Professional Category will be announced at the Outback Fusion Festival Opening.

The exhibition will then be open to the public to vote on their favourite entry. The entry with the most votes will be deemed the winner of the People’s Choice Award, to be announced at a later date.

Terms and Conditions

1     GENERAL

1.1. This photography competition is conducted by The Shire of East Pilbara (Shire).

1.2. 20 competition entries will be chosen to be showcased at a location to be decided by the Shire, on a date to be confirmed.

1.3. Information on how to enter and on prizes form part of the Terms and Conditions. Entry into this competition deems acceptance of these Terms and Conditions.

2     WHO CAN ENTER?

2.1. The Fusion Photography Competition is open to any persons residing, visiting or working within The Shire of East Pilbara.

2.2 The Open competition is for amateurs and enthusiasts. People who receive any income for their photography cannot enter the Open Category.

2.3 The Professional Category is designed for anyone who earns money from their photography or considers themselves a professional.

2.4. For participants under 18 years of age a parent or guardian consent is required. The consenting guardian is then bound by these Terms and Conditions.

3     HOW TO ENTER

3.1. Entries will be accepted from 20 December 2021 to 11 February 2022. No entries will be accepted after 4pm 11 February 2022.

3.2. Entrants can only submit a maximum of 2 entries in total across all categories.

3.3. Each entry will attract a separate fee as set out in 3.7 below.

3.4. Each entry must comply with these Terms and Conditions, including the Submission Guidelines specified below.

3.5. Entries must be submitted separately and each entry must individually meet the Technical Specifications as follows:

  • Saved as a High Resolution JPEG or JPG
  • 2500px on the longest side
  • Must not exceed 10mb
  • Must be submitted in landscape orientation
  • Must be named as the title of the image and include the entrants name and what the image is of
  • Must be taken in the 2021 or 2022 calendar year.

3.6. The entry fee outlined below must be paid for each entry submitted. All entry fees are to be paid to the Shire of East Pilbara by either cash or EFTPOS at the Shire Offices by 4pm 11th February 2022.

3.7. The categories and fees are as follows:

Youth Category (ages 10-17 years) $10 per image
Open Category - all ages $20 per image
Professional Category $20 per image

4     SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

4.1. Entries must be photographs taken within the boundaries of the East Pilbara Local Government Area

4.2 Each entry must be an original photograph produced entirely by the entrant. It must not contain any trademarks or copyright material owned whole or in part by a third party or violate any persons’ rights of privacy

4.3. No retouching or post production can be conducted by a third party

4.4. All details provided by the entrant must be true and accurate

4.5. Where there is an identifiable person in an image submitted, the entrant is responsible for obtaining a signed Model Release to provide to the Shire if requested. (A Model Release means a release signed by or on behalf of any person identifiable in the image)

4.6. The image must not contain any identifiable information of the entrant. Images submitted with watermarks or branding on them will not be considered for judging.

4.7. The image must not contain any material or content that is infringing, threatening, false, misleading, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, scandalous, inflammatory, pornographic, profane or otherwise objectionable.

4.8. The image must not plagiarise the work of any other person.

4.9. The image must not contain any material that could constitute or encourage conduct which would be considered a criminal offence, give rise to civil liability or otherwise violate any law either of the Jurisdiction or any other country whose laws may apply to the entry.

4.10. You must not upload or send any content which might disturb or damage the Shire’s reputation.

4.11. Entries that are found to breach any of these Terms and Conditions, will be considered invalid and, if awarded a prize, that prize must be returned to the Shire.

4.12.   Submissions for the Professional Category must not have been displayed or previously displayed publicly to be considered an eligible submission

5     JUDGING

5.1. The judging of images for the 20 spots available for the showcase will be completed by a panel of judges to be chosen by the Shire.

5.2. The additional judging process for the People’s Choice Award will be facilitated by the Shire but judged by the public. There will be a ballot box located at each location for the traveling exhibition, for votes to be submitted.

5.3. The top four highest scoring entries from the Youth, Open and Professional Categories will be chosen for the showcase. The next highest scoring 8 entries, across all categories, will also be chosen for the showcase.

5.4. The judges will be allocating each image a mark between one and ten for:

  • Theme – that the image encompasses the theme of ‘Heart of the Pilbara’
  • Originality – that the image is unique and original to the entrant and represents the East Pilbara

5.5. The judging process will be a streamlined system with no element of chance. There will be no correspondence between entrants and judges throughout this process.

5.6. The judges’ decision in relation to any aspect of the competition is final and binding on each person who enters. Chance plays no part in determining any winner. No correspondence will be entered into. No responsibility is accepted for late, lost or misdirected entries. The Shire will take no responsibility for entries damaged or lost in transit.

6     PRIZES

6.1. The following categories will be awarded prizes:

6.2. Winners will be announced at the Outback Fusion Festival 2022.

6.3. No Shire of East Pilbara staff, Elected Member (Councillor) or their immediate family, are eligible to win any of the Fusion Photography Competition Prize.

7     RIGHTS

7.1. All copyright remains with the photographer / entrant.

7.2. The Shire asserts no claims to the rights of any image entered into the competition except as expressed in these terms and conditions.

7.3. If the Shire or the Newman Visitor Centre publishes any images through traditional hard copy printing formats channels the photographer / entrant will be credited. Entrants consent to the use of their images in this way.

7.4. By entering the Awards, entrants grant the Shire and the Newman Visitor Centre a perpetual, worldwide, royalty free license to use selected images through the Shire’s website and social media channels and to use entrants’ images and names either on-line or in print media to promote the awards at any time in the future.

7.5. It is the entrants’ responsibility to protect their work from third parties by entering (but not limited to) metadata into the image. The Shire will not be liable for any misuse of images.

7.6. Each entrant acknowledges that the Shire is under no obligation to use or exhibit their entry.

7.7. Any use of the image in accordance with these terms and conditions will be at the discretion of the Shire.

7.8. If there is a point when the Shire must cancel the competition all entry fees will be refunded.

The Shire of East Pilbara invites you to participate in “Fusion Photography Competition” 2022.

The 20 entries exhibited will then be judged by visitors to the gallery and a People’s Choice Award will be presented to the winning entrant in late March.
