The Reconciliation Ball made a triumphant return to Newman on the weekend, with more than 250 people turning out to recognise the reconciliation movement in the region.
Hosted by the Shire of East Pilbara, the community-favourite event reflected and celebrated the reconciliation journey, focused on this year’s theme of ‘More than a word. Reconciliation takes action’.
“The initiatives and relationships within our community reflect the meaning of the Reconciliation movement, which is incredibly important in our Shire.” Shire President Anthony Middleton said.
“This is a truly inspiring event in our Shire - it demonstrates how committed we are as a community to achieving meaningful Reconciliation in the Heart of the Pilbara.”
The Reconciliation Ball recognised individuals and groups who make ongoing efforts towards Reconciliation in the East Pilbara community. This year’s highlighted honourees were Lee-Anne Ugle, Tia Brand-Williams, Angela Wilmot, Damien Bastick, Desmond Taylor and organisations YMCA’s Remote School Attendance Strategy, Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa and Martu Farm.
“These individuals and organisations are a true example of the positive action taken to improve the Reconciliation message within our community and beyond. On behalf of the Shire, I thank them for their tremendous work,” Cr Middleton said.
The MC and keynote speaker for the event was Australian living legend Ernie Dingo, an Australian actor, television presenter, comedian, teacher and promoter.
Mr Dingo delivered an inspiring keynote address about the importance of understanding ‘home’. His heartfelt message encouraged people to reflect on the importance of family and knowing your roots.
The evening also included a speech from AFLW West Coast Eagles player Imahra Cameron, who spoke about her journey and how her experiences led her to help others. “Ernie’s and Imahra’s speeches bring into focus the importance of Reconciliation in our community and the Australian people as a whole. We can all learn a lot from their messages of care and compassion, family, learning and drive,” Cr Middleton said.
The successful event wrapped up with a performance from Port Hedland band, The Headbangers.
