The Shire of East Pilbara is proud the announce the release of three waste and recycling videos with English and Martu Wangka translations, made possible as a result of a grant.
The videos have been produced as part of the Engaging Newman in Waste Management project, which was funded by the Waste Authority’s WasteSorted grant.
The three films feature local Newman residents and uses Martu Wangka translations to provide education on proper recycling practices, instructions on how to use the Containers for Change Deposit Scheme, and information about free use of the Newman Waste Management Facility for residents.
Shire President Anthony Middleton said these videos were an innovative way to bring waste and recycling messaging to a broader range of the community.
“The Shire takes great pride in its rich diverse culture and these videos are a step in the right direction for inclusion across more of our region’s residents,” he said.
“These videos are part of the Shire’s efforts to increase awareness and education about safe waste disposal and recycling in Newman.
“The Engaging Newman in Waste Management project will also include the creation of a Waste and Recycling Guide that includes Martu Wangka translations of key messages.”
The project supports the Shire’s ongoing efforts to increase recycling in the community, with vast improvements already happening.
Two million containers have been returned to the Shire’s Containers for Change refund point since it opened in October 2020. Kerbside recycling contamination rates dropped from 80% to 7% in less than 18 months, enabling the Shire to begin recycling in 2021. The Shire has also launched Recycling Hubs and Stations to collect batteries, e-waste, printer cartridges and other eligible materials.
