The Shire of East Pilbara would like to congratulate the community for reaching 1 million items deposited at the Containers for Change refund point in Newman, showcasing their dedication to improving the environment.
“From its very beginning, the program has been a win-win for the community. As a result of the program, over $100,000 has been injected back into the local community from returning containers,” Shire President Lynne Craigie OAM said.
“After opening on October 2 last year, the Shire projected to reach the 1 million milestone in October 2021. To reach this five months early is an incredible commitment from our community towards improving the environment, and I cannot thank you enough for embracing the program.”
Approximately $10,000 has been donated to local community groups and charities through Containers for Change, including Newman Cricket Association, Newman Scouts Group, Newman Women’s Shelter, Newman SAFE, and Newman Volunteer Fire and Rescue.
“If you laid out 1 million drink containers in a row touching top to bottom from Newman, it would reach all the way to Dales Gorge at Karijini National Park. That’s a phenomenal effort from the community,” Cr Craigie said.
Containers for Change is important to the community because it is reducing the amount of recyclable materials entering landfill, it reduces littering and illegal dumping and improves the visual appeal of the town.

- The Shire of East Pilbara is working with the community to improve recycling behaviour so local recyclables can be sent to South Guildford Material Recovery Facility for processing.
- The Shire is currently undertaking in the State Government-funded Bin Tagging program to educate residents about appropriate recycling behaviour for recycle bins.
