Community Notice - Recycling Bin Tagging Program Update

Published on Thursday, 3 June 2021 at 12:00:00 AM

The Bin Tagging auditing program undertaken by the Shire of East Pilbara in Newman during April and May 2021 will continue into June 2021 and whenever it is felt necessary thereafter.

This educational program has been successful in improving recycling practices and reducing contamination in recycling bins in Newman, which will reduce waste sent to landfill, for the benefit of the community and environment.

Contamination rates in recycling collected on the 26th of May were low enough to be recycled, and was sent to Cleanaway’s Material Recovery Facility for recycling.

To maintain low rates of contamination going forward, if your recycling bin has unacceptable levels of contamination, we won’t be able to collect it as it will contaminate the recycling truck.

If we can’t collect your bin, it will be taped shut and you will receive an ‘Unable to Collect’ tag that lists the contaminants that need to be removed before you call the Shire Office to have the contents collected.

If recycling habits continue to improve in Newman, the Shire of East Pilbara can continue transporting recycling for processing. Over the course of a year this is estimated to remove 3000m3 of material from landfill, or the equivalent of 2.5 times the volume of the Newman pool.

Please remember, there’s only 5 things to recycle:

  • Plastic bottles and containers (no lids)
  • Steel and aluminium cans
  • Cardboard
  • Paper
  • Glass bottles and jars (no lids)

Let’s reduce our waste and continue recycling in Newman.
