April Council Meeting Update

The April Council meeting was held on Friday 30th in Newman.

Councillors and Shire staff thanked Shire President Lynne Craigie OAM for her 17 years of service at the Shire of East Pilbara as an Elected Member and said their farewells.

Council voted on a number of important issues and the full minutes can be found here whilst some of the key outcomes from the meeting are listed below.

The Shire received $2.28 million dollars from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communication’s, Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI Program).

This program supports local government deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Council endorsed the funds to be committed to priority projects across the Shire:

  • $1.196 million to the car park and entry road to the new airport in Marble Bar, estimated to be complete by 30 June 2021.
  • $285,000 to the laneway upgrade project (between Lee Lane and Hilditch Avenue) which will be complete by early 2022.
  • $800,000 towards the reconstruction of the six Newman Netball Courts into multi-purpose courts facility which will be completed by the 30 June 2022.

The Shire was also successful in receiving $51,000 in funding towards cycle paths. A new shared path will be constructed between Newman Hospital and Newman House along Stojic road in the 2022/2023 financial year. Council has also will be considering funding towards a new shared path on Newman Drive into the Fairway Estate as identified during the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan consultation with community. This is recommended for construction in 2021/2022.

The recovery works for Nullagine are underway after the significant weather event in December last year which flooded the town and surrounds. Council has endorsed over $1.17 million dollars in works (insurance claim), and awarded the tender, with the works due to be finished in September this year.
