
![]() The Shire of East Pilbara was formed by an amalgamation of the Shires of Marble Bar and Nullagine in 1972. Upon the amalgamation the Shire became the largest Shire in the world comprising an area of over 371,696 square kilometres (larger than the State of Victoria). The main townsites are Newman, Marble Bar and Nullagine. The Shire area also contains numerous aboriginal communities, the largest being Jigalong, Punmu and Parngurr. Aboriginal communities are also located in Nullagine (Irrungadji community) and Marble Bar (Pipunya and Goodabinya communities). Total population of the region by Council Records is 10,500. The major industries in the Shire are mining, pastoral and tourism. |
