Plastic Bag Reduction Local Law Print

The Shire of East Pilbara is seeking public comment on a proposed ‘Plastic Bag Reduction Local Law’ prior to formal consideration by Council.

The local law would ban the use of ‘single use’ plastic bags throughout the Shire of East Pilbara. The definition of a ‘single use plastic bag’ would refer to a bag with a thickness of less than 35 microns. This would be in alignment with similar legislation currently in place in the SA, ACT, NT, Tasmania and other local governments. Biodegradable and reusable plastic bags of a greater thickness would not be affected.

If passed by Council, the local law would likely come into effect sometime in 2018.
