KIDS COME ON BOARD FOR THE FUNKY BUS DESIGN
The ‘Funky Bus’ workshop at the Newman Youth Centre yielded 12 enthusiastic budding designers as they prepare their designs for the Commuter Bus.
Perth Mural artist Darren Hutchens travelled to Newman to enlist the help of workshop participants in designing a new exterior for the bus, at the same time teaching them drawing and painting skills during the school holidays. He showed the youngsters the safe way to use spray paints and encouraged them to come up with local motifs and creative ideas for the bus exterior.
He also offered practical application for the techniques he taught them at the workshops by using a blank wall at the centre as a target for the newly learnt skills. The workshop participants branded the wall ‘Newman’ and added an iconic Haulpak truck to the mix.
"The Newman Youth Centre continues to provide exciting and creative outlets for our kids to learn and enjoy and the Funky Bus project is no exception," said Shire President Lynne Craigie.
"We can't wait to see the design of the Newman Youth Centre Commuter Bus. If it's anything like the wonderful Newman wall we are in for a real treat!," she added.
Darren returned to Perth with the students’ output and will now finalise the design, which is due for transfer to the commuter bus by vinyl wrapping later in the year.
