The reputation of Martumili Artists as a centre of artistic excellence and source of local pride continues to grow, as seen by the popularity of the Martumili Artist Christmas sale held on Friday. Making the trip to Newman was the Hon. Alannah MacTiernan MLC and Member for the Pilbara Kevin Michel MLA, along with Martumili Artists Nancy Karnu Taylor and Wokka Taylor.
"The Shire of East Pilbara is privileged to work so closely with Martu Artists and we are extremely grateful for their contribution to the cultural life of our region," said Shire President Lynne Craigie.
"It has been another fantastic and productive year at Martumili and we are excited to see what happens in 2019," she added.
The sale attracted Martu artists and their families from across the remote Aboriginal communities of the East Pilbara, plus a strong local contingent of residents and supporters. Martumili staff and artists were thrilled with the strong support shown by the Newman community, and wish to thank everyone for attending the event.
Shire of East Pilbara Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Edwards also addressed the guests at the sale, sharing how a recent trip to Parnngurr with the Martu Artists gave him an insight into the production of art at Martumili Artists.
"My trip to Parnngurr with Martumili emphasised to me how privileged we are at the Shire of East Pilbara to work so closely with Martu Artists and how richly they contribute to the cultural life of the East Pilbara, Australia and indeed, the world," he said.
"Martumili Artists has enjoyed a growing success over many years both in Australia and on an international stage. The accomplishments that Martumili Artists have achieved has proven to me the creative excellence that exists in this community, and demonstrates extraordinary potential for the future," he added.
The Martumili Artists sale runs until until 4pm Friday 14th December and can be viewed online at https://martumili.com.au/
