Inter-regional flight initiative acknowledged at national award

The Inter-regional Flight Network Route established in partnership with the Shire of East Pilbara, the City of Karratha and Aviair, has been recognised at the Australian Airports Association (AAA) National Airport Industry Awards.
The AAA presented Karratha Airport with the Innovation and Excellence Award for Regional Airports for the Inter-regional Flight Network which launched in August and signalled a new era of air travel for residents and visitors across the Pilbara region.

Shire President Lynne Craigie OAM welcomed the news of the award as a sign that the shared vision between Shire of East Pilbara and the City of Karratha; who both played pivotal roles in partnering with Aviair to  deliver the network route to the region; has transformed the way people travel and do business in the Pilbara.

“It’s fantastic to see two progressive regional councils who have worked together to connect towns in the Pilbara via air travel acknowledged at the national level,” she said.

‘The Inter-regional Flight Network has now opened up business opportunities, increased regional access to government and health services and offers greater connection to residents and visitors of the Pilbara region,” she said.

“On behalf of the Shire of East Pilbara, I sincerely congratulate the City of Karratha for this prestigious award for Karratha Airport and we are grateful that we have the opportunity to work in partnership with you on this ground-breaking project,” she added.

Aviair, the Shire of East Pilbara and the City of Karratha announced the route network in July 2019, with ports to include Karratha, Newman, Broome and Port Hedland with Rio Tinto committing support for the introduction of a further route between Karratha and Paraburdoo.

The National Airport Industry Awards were held at the AAA National Conference on the Gold Coast.
