“Real life. Real friendships. Real confidence from emerging youth. Growing our future generations,” is the theme of the Girls Group program which is an opportunity for girls to grow in their friendships, learn great social skills, resilience, resolve conflicts, use social media safely and Iearn other important life skills.
The program is run over seven sessions and the girls aged 10-14 years run though a number of different topics. These include being a good friend, dealing with conflict with friends and family, dealing with gossip, learning to name their emotions and tips on ways to manage them are just a few topics that the girls run through.
“Newman has a lot of choice for young people and now we have an additional activity for girls, who have the choice of participating in coordinated, well organised activities designed with females in mind,” said Shire President Lynne Craigie OAM.
“We have now run two successful programs of Girls Group – our first program was fully booked within 24 hours - and we have had extremely positive feedback from the girls who attended.” she said.
One of the girls attending had this to say:
“It has been so helpful and now I have a lot of strategies to use when I’m in these situations.”
Another other girl said, “It has been helpful to help me grow as a young woman and to make my friendships stronger."
Following the success of the program and the positive feedback there is a waiting list for the next sessions and those interested are encouraged to sign up.
