"This past week was a fantastic opportunity to put the focus of the wider community on children, their needs and achievements. It was also a great chance for children to demonstrate their talents, skills and abilities, and for us all to stop and think about the kind of society we want our children to grow up in," said Shire President Lynne Craigie.
The week included a series of events that highlighted the activities the Shire provides for children including:
- Storytime @ the square in Newman;
- Marble Bar and Nullagine Library Storytime;
- Funky Movement family session at Newman Recreation Centre;
- Children’s Pool Party at Newman and Marble Bar;
- Activities at Newman Youth Centre and
- Free family movie screening in The Square.
Children’s Week is an annual event celebrated in Australia held 19th – 28th October to celebrate children and to remind us of our responsibility to advocate for children and their right to a positive childhood. The 2018 National theme is “Children’s Views and Opinions are respected”.
"We wanted our children to have their say, so they were invited to vote for the movie they wanted to see screened at the Square. Voting slips were distributed to primary schools and childcare centres, with the most popular choice of movie being Sherlock Gnomes," she added.
Parents and community members can also join the Early Year’s Network group to voice their opinion and work together to help shape the town into a place where children can thrive. We encourage everyone in the Shire to take advantage of all the amazing activities families and children can continue to get involved in.
