Now in its final year, the Art at the Heart project is a four-year, artist-in-residence program for contemporary installation artists, sited in Newman, Western Australia, some 1200 kilometres north of Perth.
The call has gone out for an experienced curator to liaise with the three previous Art at the Heart artists and to present an exhibition of their works in September that will provide a fitting finalé for the project.
The curator will begin devising concept plans with the artists immediately after appointment, to achieve an innovative exhibition that will provide a vibrant framework for the collective works. The September exhibition will be housed in the East Pilbara Art Centre, home to the renowned Martumili artists. It is expected that installation artists Hannah Quinlivan, Yasuaki Onishi and Olaniyi Rasheed Akindiya, known as Akirash (all pictured right) ,who were resident in 2014, 2015 and 2016, respectively, will fly to the area in early September to begin creating works for the exhibition opening, scheduled to open Friday 22 September. It is anticipated that the exhibition will be of a suitably high standard to attract the interest of city-based galleries with a view to the exhibition being transported and re-installed in a prestigious Australian gallery in 2018.
Part of the raison d'être of the project is to develop the skills and capacity of East Pilbara artists and the wider community through exposure to world-class creative practice and exhibition.
Ultimately the exhibition should promote and create an awareness of the region, the residency program and the artists, both nationally and internationally.
Those interested in applying should contact the Shire of East Pilbara’s Coordinator of Arts and Cultural Development at email@example.com for the Curator’s Brief and for information about the position.
Curators will need to have their Expressions of Interest into the Shire by Friday 7 April, to be considered for the task.
